How Can Divorce Be Better Than Marriage for Children?

Although there are many possible negative outcomes that are associated with divorce, for many people divorce is actually a positive step forward. While most people don’t want to see their marriage come to an end, staying in an unhappy relationship that causes constant stress, anxiety and other negative feelings and emotions is not a promising alternative. The effects of divorce on children have been well documented and there are definitely some difficult adjustments that children have to make when their parents split up. However, living in a home with parents that are constantly at each other throats is not a healthy option either.

While some parents do all they can to stick together in order to save their marriage for their children’s sake, the fact is, a bad marriage can often be worse for the children than a good divorce. Of course, it’s a good idea for parents to work on their marriage and try to save their relationship. However, when both parties have come to the realization that they are better off by living apart, then sticking it out can be much worse than moving on.

According to divorce expert Brette Sember, in the Huffington Post, there are many reasons that a good divorce is better than a bad marriage. For example, when a couple with a bad marriage decides to go their separate ways, you now have two households without constant fighting, instead of one home that is always full of contention. Another advantage, according to Sember, is that when an estranged couple finally splits up, the children are able to get out from underneath the constant emotional roller coaster that comes with their battling parents.

While the first few months can be very difficult, eventually things calm down and children make adjustments. Without the emotional strain of their parents arguing children often feel safer and less stressed out. Another benefit for children is that a good divorce makes for happier parents. Children with happy parents tend to be happier as well. Children who go through divorce can also learn the value of compromise as their parents work together to make life after divorce better. Getting through the many difficult aspects of divorce can help children learn this valuable lesson, which can help them throughout their lives.

These are just some of the reasons that a good divorce is often a better choice than staying in a bad marriage, especially for children. Not every divorce is the same and all children will react differently to their parents ending their marriage. However, when parents work together to make the most out of a difficult situation then more often than not, their children will also learn to do the same.
