Divorce is generally considered to be a negative thing. Most people look at divorce as something they never hope to go through. There are many legitimate reasons why divorce has a negative connotation, like child custody and visitation battles; or property division, spousal support and child support disputes. Another life challenge that many people reportedly experience after divorce is poor health. However, even though this belief has been common for many years, a recent study suggests the results might actually tell a different story.
According to a new study from researchers at the London School of Economics and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, middle-aged women and men who have divorced enjoy the same health as middle-aged women and men who are still married. The researchers collected data from more than 10,000 people that were all born in 1958 during the same week. The researchers kept track of their relationship status at various age markers, and then they were all given physical examinations sometime between the ages of 44 and 46.
There were several important takeaways from the research. One of the findings determined that couples who got married in their 20s and early 30s, and that were still married in their 40s, had essentially the exact same level of health as those who were living together but had not ever married. In addition, according to the findings, those who had divorced and married someone else were no more at risk of respiratory or cardiovascular disease than those who were still with their original spouse. Lastly, those women and men who were not married and who did not currently have a partner had the highest risk of health issues.
This study provides some interesting data that should not be taken lightly. While divorce can certainly have negative effects on some people, staying in a bad marriage can also be very detrimental to one’s health.
